Tailoring is the part most people either skip or overdo. Rewriting your resume from scratch for every application is unsustainable and unnecessary; sending the identical document to forty postings is why they all go quiet. The workable system is one master resume containing every bullet you might ever use, then a short per-application pass where you reorder, cut, and adjust wording to match the posting. Reordering alone is powerful — moving your two most relevant bullets to the top of your most recent role changes what a recruiter's six-second scan actually lands on, and that scan is what decides whether the rest of the page gets read.

That scan has a predictable anatomy worth designing for. Recruiters look at your most recent job title, the company, the dates, and then whatever sits in the top third of page one. They are answering one question: is this person plausibly in the right ballpark? Everything below is read only if the answer is yes. Write bullets that survive skimming. Lead with the outcome, not the responsibility — "Cut checkout p99 latency 40% by adding read replicas" beats "Responsible for performance improvements" because it carries a verb, a number and a mechanism. Numbers survive a fast read; adjectives don't. Show scale where you have it (requests per day, users, revenue, team size), and use "I" for what you personally did rather than hiding behind "we", because interviewers and recruiters are assessing you rather than your former team.

A note on AI-written resumes, since this is an AI tool and we'd rather be straight with you: recruiters have become good at spotting raw model output, and increasingly hostile to it. The tells are consistent — inflated adjectives with no numbers, every bullet phrased identically, and claims like "spearheaded transformative initiatives" that could describe anyone. Using AI to draft and restructure is entirely reasonable. Shipping the draft unedited is not.
