How to actually choose between them

Comparison tables flatter whoever wrote them, so here is the more useful framing: work out which bottleneck you actually have, then pick the tool that targets it. If your problem is finding enough relevant roles, you want breadth of job data. If it is being credible for roles you have already found, you want honest scoring, tailoring and interview preparation. If it is time, you want autofill. Most people assume they have a discovery problem when they have a credibility problem, which is why adding more applications so rarely fixes a stalled search.

Two questions are worth asking of any tool in this category, including ours. First: does the scoring tell you something you can act on? A number like "87% match" is not actionable — it tells you nothing about why a recruiter would pass. "This role asks for five years and your resume shows three, and it names Kubernetes which never appears in your CV" is actionable. Second: who clicks submit? Tools that automate submission on platforms like LinkedIn are operating your account in a way those platforms' terms prohibit, and 2025–26 saw ban waves hit popular auto-apply extensions. Tools that fill the form and leave the final click to you get almost all the time saving with none of that exposure.

Where JobStraight is genuinely different

Three things, stated plainly. It is free with no account — every tool works in your browser without signing up, and your resume, files and notes never leave your device, which matters more than it sounds when you are uploading a CV that lists your home address. The scoring is deliberately unflattering: real skill overlap plus the knockout rules that actually filter candidates, rather than a keyword-density percentage designed to make you feel progress. And the free-utility layer is far wider than the category norm — PDF, image and text toolkits, converters, document compare, a Markdown editor and a notepad — because the annoying parts of a job search are not all resume-shaped.

Where Teal may suit you better

We would rather you picked the right tool than ours. Teal is a capable product with real users, and there are straightforward cases where it is the better fit: if you specifically want a large proprietary job database, a managed service, team or employer-side features, or you simply prefer a cloud account that syncs everywhere without you thinking about it, that is a legitimate reason to choose differently. Several tools in this space also pair fine with JobStraight — using one for discovery and JobStraight for honest scoring and interview prep is a perfectly sensible combination, and nothing here requires exclusivity.

Local-first data versus cloud storage: what the difference means for your search

Teal is a cloud-based platform: when you add your resume or track applications, that data lives on Teal's servers. You log in from anywhere, your data syncs across devices, and Teal can provide analytics because it holds all your job-search history in one place. That architecture enables features like progress dashboards, comparison across roles, and the ability to revisit old applications. It is convenient. It also means Teal knows your target roles, your application history, your resume content, and your job-search timeline. That data is valuable to Teal, and it is also valuable to anyone who breaches Teal's security. You are trusting that Teal's security is competent and that they will not sell your data or use it for purposes you did not intend.

JobStraight is local-first: your resume, your notes, your files, and your job search stay in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to our servers. You can bookmark a comparison, but we do not build a graph of your search history. You close the tab, your data is on your device. If you close the browser tab without saving, it is gone. That is the trade-off: you get privacy and control, but you lose cross-device sync and data persistence. You also lose the ability for us to give you analytics or insights based on your search patterns, because we never see that data. Local-first is simpler, safer, and less convenient. It also means your data is not an asset we can exploit if our business model changes.

Neither approach is objectively better. If you are job-searching for three months, closing browser tabs is fine. If you are managing a two-year career search across multiple devices, Teal's cloud sync is valuable. If your resume contains sensitive information (previous salary, home address, medical background, visa status), keeping it on your device is safer. If you trust Teal's security and you value the analytics, cloud storage is the right choice. The honest difference is that we are trading convenience and insight for privacy and simplicity, and you should make that trade knowingly.

Application tracking, autofill, and the risk calculus of automation

Teal offers browser autofill for job application forms, which saves time by filling fields you have already filled before. JobStraight offers 'career-page autofill': we scan the company's own careers page (not LinkedIn, not job boards), identify the application form, and fill common fields. The difference is subtle but important. Teal's extension operates across LinkedIn, Indeed, and company careers pages, which means it fills more applications but also touches platforms whose terms of service explicitly prohibit automated form filling. LinkedIn and Indeed reserve the right to ban accounts and revoke applications submitted by bots. Candidates using extensions that fill forms across those platforms have been hit by wave bans in 2025 and 2026.

JobStraight's approach is narrower: we fill forms only on company careers pages, which most companies allow. If you click submit, that is a legitimate application. If we filled forms on LinkedIn and you submitted through our tool, you are using LinkedIn's platform in a way LinkedIn's terms forbid, and LinkedIn can penalise you. The time savings from autofill are real, maybe thirty seconds per application. The risk of a ban wave is also real, maybe affecting one to five percent of heavy users in the next year. Some candidates decide the trade-off is worth it. Some do not.

Teal's free tier includes basic job tracking and limited autofill. The paid tier adds unlimited autofill and more powerful features. JobStraight's autofill is free and always has been, which is one reason we limit it to careers-page forms. We are not building a large, surveillance-based application infrastructure. We are building a minimal toolkit that solves real problems without putting you at risk. If you need more aggressive automation and you are comfortable with the ban-wave risk, Teal's paid tier is a reasonable choice. If you want to avoid that risk, JobStraight is the safer option.

Job tracking, sustainability, and the long tail of job searching

Most job-search tools focus on the first ninety days of active application. They help you submit applications fast, they show you match scores or compatibility, and then they move on. But job searches often last longer. You might apply for four months, pause, apply again six weeks later, and repeat. Teal is designed for sustained tracking: you maintain a spreadsheet-like view of where you have applied, what stage each application is at, which companies you are waiting to hear from. That is valuable for candidates who are job-searching over months, because you will otherwise lose track of which three engineering roles at different companies are in round-two interviews, which two have ghosted you, and which five sent rejections.

JobStraight is less sophisticated on tracking. We score and tailor resumes, we prep interviews, we offer a notes tool for capturing information about roles and companies, but we do not build a persistent application tracker across months. If you need that, Teal does it better and more thoroughly. Our position is that if you are actively applying—the first two months—you do not need software to track applications, because you have five or six active roles you are thinking about constantly. Once you have applied to thirty roles, most of which have ghosted you or rejected you, you stop caring. But if you are in a nine-month job search with waves of applications and a complex state of multiple roles, tracking software becomes valuable.

The honest advice: if you are planning a multi-month job search, or if you prefer to track your applications in a spreadsheet, Teal's tracking and dashboards are strong. If you are doing a focused ninety-day sprint, or if you are comfortable with a basic notes tool to remember which companies you have talked to, JobStraight is simpler and free. Teal is the platform for sustained, professional job-search management. JobStraight is the toolkit for rapid, focused application and interview prep.

Frequently asked questions

Does Teal's AI features require the paid subscription?

Teal offers a free tier with basic job tracking and resume review. The AI features—tailored application materials, match analysis, advanced tracking—are behind the paid plan. For the free features Teal offers, you do not need to pay. For unlimited use of AI features, you do.

Is my data safe on Teal if I upload my resume and application history?

Teal uses standard cloud security measures, but no cloud platform is risk-free. A breach is possible, though unlikely. If you are uncomfortable storing your complete job-search history and resume on a company's servers, local-first tools like JobStraight eliminate that risk. If you are comfortable with cloud storage and value the analytics Teal provides, the security risk is usually low enough to accept.

Can I export my data from Teal if I want to switch tools?

Teal does allow data export, so you are not locked in. Check their help documentation for the specific export format and process. The existence of export is important: if a tool does not allow you to export your data, you should be cautious about storing it there.

Is Teal's application autofill safe to use on LinkedIn and Indeed?

LinkedIn and Indeed's terms of service prohibit automated form filling and have enforcement teams watching for it. Using autofill on these platforms carries a small but real risk of account suspension or revoked applications. The risk affects roughly one to five percent of heavy extension users per year, based on 2025 ban patterns. If you prefer to avoid that risk, use autofill only on company careers pages.

Should I use Teal or JobStraight for tracking a long job search?

If you are job-searching for more than three months and want a visual dashboard to track progress across roles and stages, Teal's tracking is more powerful. If you prefer a simple notes tool and do not need detailed analytics, JobStraight is sufficient. Neither is a bad choice; it depends on your comfort with data stored in the cloud and your need for structured tracking.
