How image compression trades file size against visible quality
Image compression is not magic; it removes information from your photo in ways you may or may not notice. JPEG, the oldest format still in wide use, throws away subtle colour gradients and fine detail to shrink the file. It works by dividing the image into small blocks and discarding information within each block that the human eye is unlikely to notice. For a photo of a face or a landscape, you lose almost nothing visible. For a screenshot of text or a graphic with sharp edges, the JPEG compression artefacts become obvious—fuzzy edges and ghosting around text.
PNG was built to do lossless compression—every pixel is preserved exactly. PNG files are larger than JPEG for photographs but smaller for images with large areas of solid colour or sharp edges. It also supports transparency (a background channel), which JPEG cannot do. WebP, a newer format backed by Google, uses a smarter compression algorithm that shrinks file sizes by 25–35% compared to PNG or JPEG at the same perceived quality. The tradeoff is that WebP was introduced in 2010 and is not supported by Internet Explorer or some older mobile browsers, though modern devices handle it.

Resizing and aspect ratios: avoiding stretched or cropped photos
Resizing is not just 'make it smaller'; it's about matching the image dimensions to the space where it will appear. A profile picture needs to be square (1:1 aspect ratio); a cover letter header needs to be wide and short (roughly 16:9 or wider); a headshot for LinkedIn should be taller than it is wide (roughly 3:4). Forcing a square image to fill a rectangular space means stretching it (making the face wider and shorter) or cropping it (losing part of the photo). Both are mistakes.
Aspect ratio is the ratio of width to height. A landscape photo is typically 4:3 or 16:9; a portrait is closer to 3:4. If you need a square profile picture from a portrait photo, cropping preserves the aspect ratio at the cost of losing the edges; if you stretch instead, the face becomes wider. Resizing by scaling preserves the aspect ratio but leaves empty space (letterboxing) if the target shape is different.
