How to become an hr manager

HR sits between what the business wants to do and what it is allowed and able to do, and the job is telling both sides things they would rather not hear. The visible work is hiring, policy and payroll; the work that matters is the difficult conversation — the underperformer, the grievance, the restructure — handled in a way that is fair, documented, and survives being examined a year later.

The realistic ways in

Which people each route suits, and what it honestly costs.

From an HR generalist or coordinator role

The standard path. You know the processes and the systems; the step up is owning outcomes and advising managers rather than executing what they asked for.

From recruitment

Very common, and the gap is real: hiring is one function of many, and payroll, employee relations and compliance are learned from scratch.

From an operations or line-management role

Underrated. Having actually managed people gives you credibility with managers that a pure HR background does not, and they can tell.

From an HR degree or qualification

CIPD, an MBA in HR, or a specialist masters. Good on frameworks and employment law, thin on the room where someone is crying.

The title you get hired into first

The titles this role is actually hired under:

  • HR Executive
  • HR Generalist
  • HR Business Partner
  • People Operations Associate
  • HR Coordinator
  • Employee Relations Officer

What to learn, in order

Ordered by dependency, not by interest. Durations assume eight to ten hours a week and are an estimate, not a measurement.

  1. Employment law for your market 6–8 weeks

Notice, termination, working hours, discrimination, leave. Not to be a lawyer, but to know precisely when to stop and get one.

  2. The employee lifecycle 6 weeks

Hiring, onboarding, performance, progression, exit. Each has a process and each has a way of going wrong that costs the company money.

  3. Difficult conversations ongoing

Performance management and grievances, practised rather than read about. This is the part the role is really hired for.

  4. HR systems and data 4 weeks

An HRIS, plus enough analysis to answer attrition and headcount questions with numbers rather than impressions.

The one piece of work that changes the conversation

A policy or process you wrote or changed, and the problem it solved. Include what you deliberately left out — an over-specified policy is a policy managers route around. Interviewers are checking whether you write rules that people can actually follow under pressure, which is different from writing rules that are technically complete.

What it pays, measured

From salary figures on live hr manager postings, not a survey. Half sit between the outer two columns.

What the role is screened on

Our skill study covers six role groups and hr manager is not one of them. So this list is editorial — what the interviews test — not a count of postings.

    Who is hiring, right now

Ranked by how often each appears in hr manager advertisements, measured 2026-08-22. Advertisement frequency, not vacancy count — which is why there is an order here and no number.

    • India: CSC Financial Services, GENPACT, Hilton, Enterprise IT Solutions, H & R Johnson
    • the UK: J.P. Morgan, Amazon, Accenture, JLL, Integral UK
    • the US: Oracle, Accenture, CBRE Group, PNC Bank NA, Walgreens

Appearing high can mean growth, turnover, an agency posting for a client, or a bulk feed repeating one advertisement. Research, not a recommendation.

    What gets people rejected

Positioning yourself as the employee's advocate or the company's enforcer. HR is neither, and interviewers probe this directly — the answer they are listening for is process that is fair and defensible regardless of who it favours this time.

Whatever you write, make sure the resume that gets you the interview can survive the questions it invites — everything on it is fair game, and the numbers attract the most scrutiny. Check it against a real posting before you send it.

    How long it really takes

Six to twelve months from an HR coordinator role. Moving in from outside HR is slower, because employment law and the consequences of getting it wrong cannot be improvised.

Who finds this harder than expected. People who want to be everyone's ally. You will implement decisions you argued against and cannot explain why, and that isolation is a permanent feature of the seat.
