How to become a network engineer

Network engineering is the layer everyone forgets until it fails, at which point it is the only thing anyone talks about. The work is design, configuration and — mostly — diagnosis, because a network problem presents as a hundred unrelated application complaints. The field has changed: it is increasingly automated and cloud-connected, and engineers who never moved past manual device configuration are the ones struggling.

The realistic ways in

Which people each route suits, and what it honestly costs.

From IT support or a NOC

The standard route. You have seen the failures; the step up is design and configuration rather than escalation.

Via certification

CCNA and its successors are one of the few places in technology where a certification genuinely opens doors, because the syllabus maps closely to the daily work.

From system administration

Adjacent and common. You know the servers; you add the paths between them, which is where the intermittent problems live.

From a telecoms or electronics background

Direct transfer for carrier and infrastructure work specifically.

The title you get hired into first

The titles this role is actually hired under:

  • Network Engineer
  • Network Administrator
  • NOC Engineer
  • Network Support Engineer
  • Infrastructure Engineer
  • Network Operations Analyst

What to learn, in order

Ordered by dependency, not by interest. Durations assume eight to ten hours a week and are an estimate, not a measurement.

  1. The model and the protocols 6–8 weeks

OSI layers, TCP/IP, subnetting, DNS, DHCP, NAT. Subnetting in particular must be automatic, not looked up.

  2. Routing and switching 8–10 weeks

VLANs, trunking, static and dynamic routing, spanning tree. Build it in a lab; reading about it does not stick.

  3. Security and edge 6 weeks

Firewalls, ACLs, VPNs, and where the network meets the internet — the part most incidents involve.

  4. Automation and cloud networking 6–8 weeks

Python or Ansible for configuration, plus cloud VPCs. This is the difference between a career and a plateau in this field.

The one piece of work that changes the conversation

A lab you built — physical or virtual — with routing, switching, VLANs and a firewall, plus a write-up of one problem you deliberately created and then diagnosed. The diagnosis narrative is what matters, because this job is triage and the interview will be a troubleshooting scenario rather than a recall test.

What it pays, measured

From salary figures on live network engineer postings, not a survey. Half sit between the outer two columns.

Salary figures on network engineer postings, by market

India ₹5.4L ₹11L ₹18L 152
the UK £38k £56k at least £70k 800
the US $109k at least $140k at least $140k 4,023

How much of this the source estimated rather than read off a posting: India 0%, the UK 29%, the US 70%. The full note, and what it means for each market, is on the salary page below.

The full distribution for each market, the twelve-month movement and the employers posting most of these roles are on the network engineer salary page.

What the role is screened on

Our skill study covers six role groups and network engineer is not one of them. So this list is editorial — what the interviews test — not a count of postings.

    Who is hiring, right now

Ranked by how often each appears in network engineer advertisements, measured 2026-08-22. Advertisement frequency, not vacancy count — which is why there is an order here and no number.

    • India: GENPACT, Oracle, Enterprise IT Solutions, Tata Communications, Tata Unisys
    • the UK: Amazon, Stantec, Element Materials Technology, Google, M&E Group
    • the US: Amazon, Oracle, Leidos, Meta, United States Army

Appearing high can mean growth, turnover, an agency posting for a client, or a bulk feed repeating one advertisement. Research, not a recommendation.

    What gets people rejected

Diagnosing by restarting devices. Every interview includes a fault scenario, and an approach with no method — check the layer below, isolate, verify — signals someone who has been lucky rather than systematic.

Whatever you write, make sure the resume that gets you the interview can survive the questions it invites — everything on it is fair game, and the numbers attract the most scrutiny. Check it against a real posting before you send it.

    How long it really takes

Six to twelve months from IT support with a certification and a lab. This is one of the more accessible technical routes for someone without a degree.

Who finds this harder than expected. People who want daylight hours. Network changes happen in maintenance windows, and maintenance windows happen at night.

    Common questions

How long does it take to become a network engineer?

Six to twelve months from IT support with a certification and a lab. This is one of the more accessible technical routes for someone without a degree.

Do you need a degree to become a network engineer?

Not usually a specific one — From IT support or a NOC; Via certification; From system administration; From a telecoms or electronics background are all routes people take here. Where a degree matters it is a filter at large employers rather than something the work needs.

What should be in a network engineer portfolio?

A lab you built — physical or virtual — with routing, switching, VLANs and a firewall, plus a write-up of one problem you deliberately created and then diagnosed. The diagnosis narrative is what matters, because this job is triage and the interview will be a troubleshooting scenario rather than a recall test.

What gets people rejected for network engineer roles?

Diagnosing by restarting devices. Every interview includes a fault scenario, and an approach with no method — check the layer below, isolate, verify — signals someone who has been lucky rather than systematic.

Which job title should you apply to first?

Not network engineer necessarily — Network Engineer, Network Administrator, NOC Engineer, Network Support Engineer are where people are actually hired in.

Is network engineer the right role for you?

It is harder than the internet implies for one group in particular: people who want daylight hours. Network changes happen in maintenance windows, and maintenance windows happen at night.
