How to become a project manager
The plan is the smallest part. The job is what happens when the plan meets reality: a dependency slips, someone leaves, the scope grows quietly. Project management is largely the practice of making problems visible early enough to be cheap, which requires telling people things they would rather hear later.

The realistic ways in
Which people each route suits, and what it honestly costs.
From coordination inside a team
Scheduling, coordination, operations. The most common route, and often a title change rather than a job change — you are already doing it.
From a technical role
Engineering, QA, IT. You can judge whether an estimate is honest, which is a serious advantage on technical projects.
Via certification
PMP, PRINCE2 or a scrum credential. These help you pass a filter and do not substitute for having run something. Best taken alongside real delivery, not before it.
The title you get hired into first
The titles this role is actually hired under:
- Project Coordinator
- Project Manager
- Scrum Master
- Delivery Manager
- Programme Coordinator
- Technical Project Manager
106 live project manager openings are on the site right now, refreshed on every build and linking to the employer's own posting.
What to learn, in order
Ordered by dependency, not by interest. Durations assume eight to ten hours a week and are an estimate, not a measurement.
-
Planning and dependencies 4 weeks
Breaking work down, sequencing it, and finding the dependency that will hurt. Estimation is a skill, not a formula.
-
Risk, in practice 4 weeks
Identifying, escalating and being wrong in public occasionally. A risk register nobody reads is theatre.
-
Stakeholder communication ongoing
Status that is read, escalation that lands, and bad news delivered early. The genuine core of the role.
-
A delivery method 4–6 weeks
Agile, waterfall, or the hybrid your industry actually runs. Know which problems each solves rather than which is fashionable.
The one piece of work that changes the conversation
A retrospective on something you actually delivered — at work, in a community group, anywhere — covering what slipped, when you knew, what you did, and what you would change. Interviewers are listening for whether you saw problems coming or reported them after the fact.
What it pays, measured
From salary figures on live project manager postings, not a survey. Half sit between the outer two columns.
| Market | Lower quarter below | Midpoint | Upper quarter above | Postings with a figure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| India | ₹4.6L | ₹9.2L | ₹17L | 4,081 |
| the UK | £45k | £58k | at least £70k | 20,092 |
| the US | $78k | $109k | at least $140k | 112,043 |
How much of this the source estimated rather than read off a posting: India 0%, the UK 29%, the US 70%. The full note, and what it means for each market, is on the salary page below.
The full distribution for each market, the twelve-month movement and the employers posting most of these roles are on the project manager salary page.

Who is hiring, right now
Ranked by how often each appears in project manager advertisements, measured 2026-08-22. Advertisement frequency, not vacancy count — which is why there is an order here and no number.
- India: GENPACT, Oracle, CSC Financial Services, Bank of America, HP Textile Mill
- the UK: AECOM, AtkinsRealis, Stantec, WSP Group, Amazon
- the US: Oracle, CDM Smith, Deloitte, Michael Page, Amazon
Appearing high can mean growth, turnover, an agency posting for a client, or a bulk feed repeating one advertisement. Research, not a recommendation.
What gets people rejected
Describing a project that went perfectly. Every interviewer knows none do, so the answer signals either inexperience or an unwillingness to own problems.
The full question set this role is screened on, each with the shape of a strong answer, is in the project manager interview questions. The resume structure it is read against is in the project manager resume example.
How long it really takes
Six to twelve months from a coordinating role. Difficult to enter cold — this is a role usually earned by having quietly done it before holding the title.
Who finds this harder than expected. People who want to do the work rather than enable it. Your output is other people's output, and that requires a particular tolerance for indirect satisfaction.
