What salary can an HR manager expect?
In India, roughly 8–18 LPA at mid-level and 20–40 LPA at senior or HRBP level; technology and financial services pay above manufacturing and services. The US band is about $75,000–$120,000, the UK £40,000–£70,000. Business partner roles pay above generalist HR at the same seniority.
What separates an HR manager from an HR generalist?
Ownership of outcomes rather than processes. A generalist runs onboarding, payroll queries and policy; a manager is answerable for retention, hiring quality and what the engagement numbers do. If a posting lists only process responsibilities, the title is inflated and the salary usually follows the process work.
Do I need to be comfortable with data?
Yes, and it is the most common gap. Attrition by team and tenure, time to hire, offer-accept rate, cost per hire — being able to pull and interpret those yourself is what gets HR taken seriously in a leadership meeting, and it is increasingly a screening question.
