What salary can a product designer expect?
In India, roughly 8–16 LPA at mid-level in product companies and 20–35 LPA senior; agencies pay less for the same title. The US band is about $95,000–$150,000, the UK £45,000–£80,000. Designers who can show measured outcomes rather than screens sit at the top of every band.
What matters more, the portfolio or the CV?
The portfolio, by a wide margin — it is usually the only thing looked at before a first call. What separates the ones that get replies is a problem statement and a measured result. Three case studies explaining what changed beat twenty screens of finished interfaces.
Do I need to know how to code?
No, but knowing what is expensive to build changes the conversations you have with engineers, and it shows. Enough HTML and CSS to understand why a layout is hard, plus fluency with design systems and component thinking, is the level that actually helps.
