What salary can a technical writer expect?
In India, roughly 5–12 LPA at mid-level and 15–28 LPA senior, with API and developer documentation above general product writing. The US band is about $70,000–$110,000, the UK £35,000–£60,000. Writers who work in the codebase rather than alongside it earn noticeably more.
Do I need to be able to code?
For developer documentation, enough to read the code and run the examples yourself — otherwise you are transcribing what engineers tell you and the errors go straight through. Docs-as-code is now standard, so Git, Markdown and a static site generator are practical requirements rather than nice-to-haves.
What should a portfolio contain?
A page of real documentation you wrote, ideally with the before and after. Rewriting a confusing open-source README and linking both versions is the single most effective portfolio piece in this field, because it demonstrates the judgement rather than describing it.
