Working as a backend developer in Washington DC
Government contracting, cybersecurity and policy-adjacent technology. A security clearance changes your market value more than any skill here, and many postings are closed to you without one — check before investing time in an application.
Most of the hiring in this list clusters around Arlington, Reston, Tysons and the District itself. Location on a posting is not always literal — check whether a role is genuinely on site, and whether "remote" means remote within the country or remote from anywhere, because the two are priced differently.

Backend Developer pay and hiring, asked properly
What salary can a backend developer expect?
In India, roughly 10–18 LPA at mid-level in product companies and 25–45 LPA senior; services firms pay noticeably less for the same title. The US band is about $90,000–$140,000 mid-level, the UK £40,000–£65,000. The steep jump is owning a system's reliability, not shipping endpoints on it.
Does the language I specialise in actually matter?
Less than the domain it pulls you into. Go and Rust do not pay more by themselves; the infrastructure and distributed-systems work that tends to use them does. Pick the language that puts you next to the problems you want, then stop shopping for languages.
Should I specialise or stay a generalist?
Generalists do well for a few years and then compete with everyone. Depth in one area — data systems, infrastructure, payments — is what makes you hard to replace and gives you a choice of roles. Pick something you can stand to read about on a bad day.
