How to become an accountant
Accounting is deadline work. The month closes whether or not you are ready, and the job is producing numbers that are right, on time, and defensible to somebody who will check them. The stereotype is arithmetic; the reality is reconciliation — finding why two systems disagree by four hundred rupees and not resting until you know.

The realistic ways in
Which people each route suits, and what it honestly costs.
A professional qualification
CA, ACCA, CPA, CIMA. In most markets this is the main route, and part-qualified candidates are hired routinely while they finish. It is slow, hard, and the single most reliable credential in the field.
A commerce or accounting degree
Straight into accounts payable, receivable or general ledger work. You learn the practice on the job, which is where most of it lives anyway.
From bookkeeping or accounts assistance
You already know the ledgers. What is missing is the reporting layer and the standards, and employers will fund the qualification for someone who is already doing the work well.
From an unrelated background
Possible through a qualification, and slow. Nobody hires an accountant on enthusiasm, because the cost of an error is borne by someone else.
The title you get hired into first
The titles this role is actually hired under:
- Accounts Executive
- Accounts Payable Associate
- Junior Accountant
- Audit Assistant
- Bookkeeper
- Finance Associate
118 live accountant openings are on the site right now, refreshed on every build and linking to the employer's own posting.
What to learn, in order
Ordered by dependency, not by interest. Durations assume eight to ten hours a week and are an estimate, not a measurement.
-
Double-entry, until it is automatic 6–8 weeks
Debits, credits, and why the balance sheet balances. Everything else is built on this and gaps here surface immediately.
-
The three statements and how they link 6 weeks
Profit and loss, balance sheet, cash flow. Knowing that profit is not cash is the first real professional insight in this field.
-
Excel to an auditable standard 4–6 weeks
Lookups, pivots, and a workbook another person can follow. A model only you can read is a liability, not an asset.
-
The system your market runs on 3–4 weeks
Tally, Zoho, QuickBooks, SAP, Xero. Pick from local job postings rather than from tutorials.
The one piece of work that changes the conversation
A reconciliation you can talk through: two sources that disagreed, how you found the difference, and what you changed so it stopped happening. This is more persuasive than any certificate, because it is the actual daily work and it demonstrates the trait the job selects for, which is not letting a discrepancy go.
What it pays, measured
From salary figures on live accountant postings, not a survey. Half sit between the outer two columns.
| Market | Lower quarter below | Midpoint | Upper quarter above | Postings with a figure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| India | ₹3.9L | ₹7.8L | ₹15L | 1,162 |
| the UK | £32k | £43k | £61k | 37,005 |
| the US | $70k | $88k | $114k | 7,149 |
How much of this the source estimated rather than read off a posting: India 0%, the UK 29%, the US 70%. The full note, and what it means for each market, is on the salary page below.
The full distribution for each market, the twelve-month movement and the employers posting most of these roles are on the accountant salary page.
What the role is screened on
Our skill study covers six role groups and accountant is not one of them. So this list is editorial — what the interviews test — not a count of postings.
Who is hiring, right now
Ranked by how often each appears in accountant advertisements, measured 2026-08-22. Advertisement frequency, not vacancy count — which is why there is an order here and no number.
- India: GENPACT, Bank of America, CSC Financial Services, Oracle, HP Textile Mill
- the UK: Tutorful, Amazon Flex, Sanctuary Group, Avery Healthcare, Asda
- the US: Robert Half, Intuit, Deloitte, PwC, EY
Appearing high can mean growth, turnover, an agency posting for a client, or a bulk feed repeating one advertisement. Research, not a recommendation.
What gets people rejected
Being casual about a small difference. "It is only a few hundred" is the answer that ends an accounting interview, because the amount is never the point — an unexplained gap means the process is wrong somewhere you cannot see.
Whatever you write, make sure the resume that gets you the interview can survive the questions it invites — everything on it is fair game, and the numbers attract the most scrutiny. Check it against a real posting before you send it.
How long it really takes
Three to six months into an entry-level accounts role with a commerce background. A full professional qualification is three to five years, and it is normal to work throughout.
Who finds this harder than expected. People who need variety. The cycle repeats monthly forever, and finding satisfaction in a clean close rather than in novelty is what separates the people who stay.
