How to become an android developer

Android development means shipping to devices you do not control, in versions you cannot force people to update, on screens of every size. The code is the easy part; the difficulty is fragmentation, background execution limits that tighten every release, and a store review process that can hold your fix for days. Testing on one flagship phone is how most bugs reach production.

The realistic ways in

Which people each route suits, and what it honestly costs.

From Java or Kotlin backend work

The most direct route. The language transfers and the gap is the platform — lifecycle, UI, and the constraints of a battery-powered device.

From another mobile platform

iOS to Android is common and quick. The concepts map; the ecosystem and the tooling do not.

Self-taught, shipping to the Play Store

Wholly viable and the strongest evidence available. A published app with real installs and real reviews answers most of an interview before it starts.

From a computer science degree

Good fundamentals, no platform. Expect the interview to be entirely about lifecycle, concurrency and memory on a device rather than about algorithms.

The title you get hired into first

The titles this role is actually hired under:

  • Android Developer
  • Mobile Application Developer
  • Android Engineer
  • Junior Mobile Developer
  • Kotlin Developer
  • Software Engineer (Mobile)

What to learn, in order

Ordered by dependency, not by interest. Durations assume eight to ten hours a week and are an estimate, not a measurement.

  1. Kotlin and the Android lifecycle 8 weeks

Activities, fragments, configuration changes and process death. Nearly every early bug is a lifecycle misunderstanding.

  2. Modern UI 6–8 weeks

Jetpack Compose, plus enough of the older View system to work in an existing codebase, which is what most jobs are.

  3. Data and concurrency 6 weeks

Coroutines, Room, network calls, and caching so the app is usable on a poor connection.

  4. Shipping 3–4 weeks

Signing, store listing, staged rollout, crash reporting. The release process is part of the craft and is rarely taught.

The one piece of work that changes the conversation

One app published on the Play Store that does something small properly: works offline, survives rotation and process death, and handles a permission being denied. Those three are the platform's real curriculum, and an app that handles all three is more convincing than a feature-rich one that crashes when the network drops.

What it pays, measured

From salary figures on live android developer postings, not a survey. Half sit between the outer two columns.

the UK £58k at least £70k at least £70k 48

How much of this the source estimated rather than read off a posting: India 0%, the UK 29%, the US 70%. The full note, and what it means for each market, is on the salary page below.

What the role is screened on

Our skill study covers six role groups and android developer is not one of them. So this list is editorial — what the interviews test — not a count of postings.

    Who is hiring, right now

Ranked by how often each appears in android developer advertisements, measured 2026-08-25. Advertisement frequency, not vacancy count — which is why there is an order here and no number.

    • India: Sikka Infrastructure Private, HP Textile Mill, BP Ergo, Delhivery, Covenant Consultants
    • the UK: Google, TripAdvisor, Starling Bank, J.P. Morgan, JPMorgan Chase
    • the US: Capital One, Trellix, Google, Redolent, Amazon

Appearing high can mean growth, turnover, an agency posting for a client, or a bulk feed repeating one advertisement. Research, not a recommendation.

    What gets people rejected

Having only tested on one device and one Android version. Interviewers ask about fragmentation directly, and a candidate who has not met it has not really shipped.

Whatever you write, make sure the resume that gets you the interview can survive the questions it invites — everything on it is fair game, and the numbers attract the most scrutiny. Check it against a real posting before you send it.

    How long it really takes

Six to twelve months to employable with a published app. The Play Store's low barrier means your portfolio can be genuinely public, which is an advantage over most fields.

Who finds this harder than expected. People who like controlling the environment. You will support devices you have never held, on OS versions you would rather drop, for users who never update.
