How to become a frontend developer
The visible half of the product, which means every design compromise, every browser inconsistency and every accessibility obligation lands on your desk. The framework churn is real but overstated as a problem: the durable skills are HTML semantics, CSS layout, how the browser renders, and how JavaScript actually behaves. People who learn a framework without those get stuck the first time something breaks below the abstraction.

The realistic ways in
Which people each route suits, and what it honestly costs.
Self-taught, building things
The most common route in this discipline and entirely respectable. Front-end is unusually meritocratic because the work is visible — a live site is a stronger credential than a certificate.
From design
You bring craft and an eye for detail that most developers lack. The gap is programming depth: state, data fetching, testing. Designers who cross over are disproportionately valued.
From a computer science degree
You have the fundamentals and often little browser knowledge — CSS layout, the accessibility tree and rendering behaviour are rarely taught and are most of the daily work.
The title you get hired into first
The titles this role is actually hired under:
- Frontend Developer
- UI Developer
- Web Developer
- React Developer
- Junior Software Engineer (frontend)
109 live frontend developer openings are on the site right now, refreshed on every build and linking to the employer's own posting.
What to learn, in order
Ordered by dependency, not by interest. Durations assume eight to ten hours a week and are an estimate, not a measurement.
-
HTML and CSS, seriously 6 weeks
Semantic markup, flexbox, grid, responsive layout, and the cascade. The stage everyone rushes and everyone regrets rushing.
-
JavaScript, without a framework 8 weeks
The DOM, events, async, fetch. Learn what React is doing for you before you let it do it.
-
One framework 8 weeks
React, Vue or Svelte — chosen from local job postings, not from popularity. Components, state, routing, data fetching.
-
Accessibility and performance 4 weeks
Keyboard navigation, screen readers, contrast, Core Web Vitals. Increasingly a hiring filter rather than a bonus, and a genuine differentiator at junior level.
The one piece of work that changes the conversation
Two or three live sites, responsive, keyboard-navigable, and fast on a mid-range phone. Include one where you fixed a specific performance or accessibility problem and can say what you measured before and after. Front-end hiring is one of the few places where the reviewer will open your work in a browser and press Tab.
What it pays, measured
From salary figures on live frontend developer postings, not a survey. Half sit between the outer two columns.
| Market | Lower quarter below | Midpoint | Upper quarter above | Postings with a figure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| India | ₹5.6L | ₹11L | ₹18L | 1,385 |
| the UK | £62k | at least £70k | at least £70k | 137 |
| the US | $137k | at least $140k | at least $140k | 653 |
How much of this the source estimated rather than read off a posting: India 0%, the UK 29%, the US 70%. The full note, and what it means for each market, is on the salary page below.
The full distribution for each market, the twelve-month movement and the employers posting most of these roles are on the frontend developer salary page.
What the postings ask for
Our study read 1,460 software engineer postings and counted the skills they named: Python 33%, AWS 29%, Java 24%, Kubernetes 23%. It measured software engineering as one group and did not separate frontend developer roles from the rest, so treat these as the shape of the discipline rather than a figure for this job title specifically.
The full table is on how to become a software engineer, and the method is in the skill-demand study.
Read that list with the group in mind. Python, AWS, Java and Kubernetes are server-side and infrastructure skills, and they lead the count because general and back-end engineering dominate the sample. It does not mean front-end postings ask for Kubernetes. What it does tell you is that the discipline you are joining is measured, hired and promoted alongside those roles, and the front-end engineers who progress fastest are usually the ones who can hold a conversation about what happens after the request leaves the browser.
What is specific to this role
- React/Vue/Angular
- JavaScript (ES6+)
- CSS/Responsive Design
- Performance Optimization
- TypeScript
- Testing (Jest/Vitest)
- REST APIs
- Browser DevTools
That list is editorial — what these interviews test, drawn from the question bank — not a count of job descriptions.
Who is hiring, right now
Ranked by how often each appears in frontend developer advertisements, measured 2026-08-22. Advertisement frequency, not vacancy count — which is why there is an order here and no number.
- India: Sikka Infrastructure Private, Oracle, GENPACT, BP Ergo, Experis
- the UK: Northrop Grumman, Bet365, Microlise, attio, London Stock Exchange Group
- the US: Deloitte, Chemours, PNC Bank NA, Teradata, Insight Global
Appearing high can mean growth, turnover, an agency posting for a client, or a bulk feed repeating one advertisement. Research, not a recommendation.
What gets people rejected
A portfolio site that breaks on a phone or cannot be navigated by keyboard. It is the one credential every reviewer checks, and failing on your own site is read as either not knowing or not caring.
The full question set this role is screened on, each with the shape of a strong answer, is in the frontend developer interview questions. The resume structure it is read against is in the frontend developer resume example.
How long it really takes
Six to twelve months to employable at ten to fifteen hours a week. The fastest of the engineering routes, because the feedback loop is immediate and the work is visible.
Who finds this harder than expected. People who dislike ambiguous requirements. "Make it feel more premium" is a real ticket you will receive, and turning it into decisions is part of the job.
