How to become a financial analyst
Most of the work is building and maintaining models that other people make decisions from, and the largest professional risk is a broken formula nobody notices. Precision matters more than sophistication here — an elegant model with a hardcoded cell is worse than a plain one that is auditable. The reporting cycle is relentless and largely non-negotiable.

The realistic ways in
Which people each route suits, and what it honestly costs.
From an accounting or finance degree
Direct and expected. The gap is usually modelling craft rather than theory — courses teach concepts and employers want a clean, auditable workbook.
From an accounting role
Accounts payable, audit, bookkeeping. You know how the numbers are produced, which is exactly the credibility analysts need.
Via a professional qualification
CA, CFA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA. In many markets this is the primary route, and part-qualified candidates are hired routinely while they finish.
From data analysis
You have the tooling. The gap is accounting literacy — reading a balance sheet properly, and knowing what accrual means for your model.
The title you get hired into first
The titles this role is actually hired under:
- Financial Analyst
- FP&A Analyst
- Business Analyst (finance)
- Junior Analyst
- Management Accountant
- Investment Analyst

What to learn, in order
Ordered by dependency, not by interest. Durations assume eight to ten hours a week and are an estimate, not a measurement.
-
Accounting fundamentals 6–8 weeks
The three statements and how they connect. Everything else rests on this and shortcuts here surface immediately in interview.
-
Excel to a professional standard 6 weeks
Lookups, pivots, scenario analysis, and modelling structure that another analyst can audit. Still the profession's primary tool.
-
Financial modelling 8–10 weeks
Forecasting, valuation, sensitivity. Build one properly rather than watching ten being built.
-
Analysis tooling 4–6 weeks
SQL and a BI tool, increasingly expected as finance teams outgrow the spreadsheet.
The one piece of work that changes the conversation
A three-statement model built from a real company's published accounts, with assumptions on their own clearly labelled tab and a short written commentary on what the numbers mean. The commentary is the differentiator — plenty of candidates can build a model and few can say what it implies.
What it pays, measured
From salary figures on live financial analyst postings, not a survey. Half sit between the outer two columns.
| Market | Lower quarter below | Midpoint | Upper quarter above | Postings with a figure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| India | ₹6.8L | ₹13L | ₹20L | 52 |
| the UK | £40k | £52k | £67k | 418 |
| the US | $74k | $96k | $122k | 2,749 |
How much of this the source estimated rather than read off a posting: India 0%, the UK 29%, the US 70%. The full note, and what it means for each market, is on the salary page below.
The full distribution for each market, the twelve-month movement and the employers posting most of these roles are on the financial analyst salary page.
What the role is screened on

- Financial Modeling (DCF, LBO)
- Excel/VBA
- Valuation Techniques
- Data Analysis
- SQL for Finance
- Financial Statements
- Communication
- Industry Research
Who is hiring, right now
Ranked by how often each appears in financial analyst advertisements, measured 2026-08-22. Advertisement frequency, not vacancy count — which is why there is an order here and no number.
- India: GENPACT, Oracle, HP Textile Mill, Teleperformance India, H & R Johnson
- the UK: Citi, IBM, Amazon, JPMorgan Chase, Accenture
- the US: Oracle, Deloitte, Siemens, CDM Smith, Amazon
Appearing high can mean growth, turnover, an agency posting for a client, or a bulk feed repeating one advertisement. Research, not a recommendation.
What gets people rejected
A model with hardcoded numbers inside formulas. It is the first thing a reviewer checks, it makes the model unauditable, and in this profession that is a competence signal rather than a style preference.
The full question set this role is screened on, each with the shape of a strong answer, is in the financial analyst interview questions. The resume structure it is read against is in the financial analyst resume example.
How long it really takes
Three to nine months with a finance or commerce background. Longer without one, because the accounting foundation genuinely cannot be skipped.
Who finds this harder than expected. People who dislike deadlines they do not control. Month-end and quarter-end arrive regardless of what else is happening.
