Application volume is the defining feature of this market. LinkedIn has been reported to process around 11,000 job applications per minute — roughly a 45% year-on-year rise — and recruiters describe receiving 300–500 applications on a popular role within three days. The practical consequence is that being a plausible candidate is no longer enough; you need to be an obvious one for the specific posting.
Two checks are worth doing before every application. First, the knockouts — work authorisation, years of experience, location and on-site expectations are filterable fields, and failing one ends the application regardless of how strong the rest is. Second, keyword coverage: make sure every skill you genuinely have that the posting names appears in your resume in the posting's own words. That is coverage, not density, and it never means adding skills you don't have. The widely-repeated claim that ATS software auto-rejects 75% of resumes is a myth traceable to a 2012 sales pitch — what actually filters you is those knockout fields plus a recruiter's six-to-eight-second scan, as our ATS guide explains with sources.

How would you build a business case for a new system? Case
- State the problem and quantify its current cost.
- Lay out options including 'do nothing' as the baseline.
- Model costs (build, licence, run, change) vs benefits over 3–5 years.
- Show payback, NPV and the key sensitivities.
- Name the risks and mitigations.
Watch out: Only presenting the option you already favour.
At senior level: Stress-test assumptions with a defensible sensitivity analysis.
Walk me through the three financial statements and how they connect. Conceptual
- Income statement shows profitability over a period, ending in net income.
- Net income flows to retained earnings on the balance sheet and starts the cash flow statement.
- Cash flow reconciles net income to cash across operating, investing, financing.
- Ending cash on the cash flow statement is the balance sheet cash line.
- The balance sheet must balance: assets = liabilities + equity.
Watch out: Describing them separately — the links ARE the question.
At senior level: Walk a change (e.g. $10 depreciation) through all three cleanly.
Walk me through a DCF valuation. Conceptual
- Project unlevered free cash flow for an explicit period, usually 5 years.
- Pick a discount rate — WACC for unlevered cash flows.
- Calculate terminal value by perpetuity growth or exit multiple.
- Discount all cash flows and terminal value to today.
- Get enterprise value, then bridge to equity value by subtracting net debt.
Watch out: Skipping the EV-to-equity bridge, or a terminal growth rate above GDP.
At senior level: Run sensitivities on WACC and growth; sanity-check against comparables.
What's the difference between enterprise value and equity value? Conceptual
- Enterprise value is the operating business's value to all capital providers.
- Equity value is what's left for shareholders.
- EV = equity value + net debt (plus minorities/preferred where relevant).
- Pair EV with pre-interest metrics (EBITDA); equity value with post-interest (net income).
Watch out: Pairing EV with net income — a classic trap.
At senior level: Explain why EV is capital-structure neutral and better for comparison.
How would you build a three-statement model? Case
- Start with historicals and clean assumptions on their own sheet.
- Drive revenue from real operating drivers (volume × price), not flat growth.
- Build schedules: debt, depreciation, working capital.
- Link the three statements and confirm the balance sheet balances.
- Add scenarios and error checks so breakages are visible.
Watch out: Hardcoding numbers inside formulas so nobody can audit it.
At senior level: Discuss interest circularity and how you handle it deliberately.
How do you perform variance analysis? Conceptual
- Compare actuals against budget or forecast for the period.
- Split the variance into price and volume effects where possible.
- Focus only on variances above a materiality threshold.
- Get the business explanation from the owner — don't invent one.
- Recommend an action or a forecast revision.
Watch out: Reporting numbers with no explanation of drivers.
At senior level: Use it to improve forecast accuracy, not just explain the past.

Financial Analyst Jobs — common questions
What salary can a financial analyst expect?
In India, roughly 7–15 LPA early and 12–25 LPA senior, with equity research and asset management above corporate finance. The US band is about $65,000–$95,000 base, the UK £30,000–£50,000. Sector moves this number more than the title does — the same work pays differently depending on whose money it is.
Is a CFA or an MBA necessary?
Neither is required to get hired. Both help mid-career, the CFA particularly on the investment side. Early on they are a weaker signal than one model you built and can defend line by line while somebody questions your assumptions.
Can I move in from a non-finance background?
Routinely, from engineering, maths, economics or operations. The accounting and the domain rules are learnable in months; the analytical habits are not. You will be tested on whether you can own a model end to end and explain the answer to someone who will never read the workings.
