How to become a procurement

Procurement is negotiation plus risk management, and the part people underestimate is that you are mostly negotiating internally. Convincing your own engineering team to accept a supplier they did not pick is harder than getting a discount. The public image is cost-cutting; the actual mandate is getting the right thing at a defensible price without the supply failing.

The realistic ways in

Which people each route suits, and what it honestly costs.

From operations or supply chain

The natural adjacency. You understand what the business consumes and what happens when it does not arrive, which is the context every sourcing decision needs.

From finance

Strong on cost analysis and contract terms. The gap is the technical conversation with the people who will actually use what you buy.

From an engineering or technical role

Unusually valuable in manufacturing and technology procurement, because you can judge whether the cheaper specification is genuinely equivalent.

Graduate schemes

Large manufacturers and retailers run structured procurement intakes. A real entry point and less contested than finance or consulting.

The title you get hired into first

The titles this role is actually hired under:

  • Procurement Executive
  • Buyer
  • Sourcing Analyst
  • Purchasing Officer
  • Category Assistant
  • Vendor Management Associate

What to learn, in order

Ordered by dependency, not by interest. Durations assume eight to ten hours a week and are an estimate, not a measurement.

  1. Total cost of ownership 3–4 weeks

Price is one line. Freight, duty, quality failure, switching cost, payment terms and stock-holding are the rest, and the cheapest quote frequently loses on the full picture.

  2. Supplier evaluation 4–6 weeks

Capability, financial stability, capacity, and single-source risk. A supplier who cannot survive a bad quarter is a risk you bought without pricing it.

  3. Negotiation ongoing

Preparation, alternatives, and knowing your walk-away before you enter the room. Negotiation is mostly homework.

  4. Contracts and compliance 4 weeks

SLAs, penalties, renewal traps, and the approval rules your organisation runs on.

The one piece of work that changes the conversation

One sourcing decision written up properly: what was needed, which suppliers you considered, what you compared beyond price, what you chose and what you gave up. Include the risk you accepted knowingly. Procurement interviews are largely about whether you think in total cost rather than in unit price, and a written comparison shows that faster than any answer.

What it pays, measured

From salary figures on live procurement postings, not a survey. Half sit between the outer two columns.

Salary figures on procurement postings, by market
MarketLower quarter belowMidpointUpper quarter abovePostings with a figure
India ₹4.3L ₹8.5L ₹16L 1,089
the UK £44k £59k at least £70k 8,159
the US $77k $111k at least $140k 30,356

How much of this the source estimated rather than read off a posting: India 0%, the UK 29%, the US 70%. The full note, and what it means for each market, is on the salary page below.

The full distribution for each market, the twelve-month movement and the employers posting most of these roles are on the procurement salary page.

What the role is screened on

Our skill study covers six role groups and procurement is not one of them. So this list is editorial — what the interviews test — not a count of postings.

    Who is hiring, right now

Ranked by how often each appears in procurement advertisements, measured 2026-08-25. Advertisement frequency, not vacancy count — which is why there is an order here and no number.

    • India: GENPACT, CSC Financial Services, Micron Electricals, BP Ergo, H & R Johnson
    • the UK: GSF Car Parts, AECOM, Amazon, Mace Group, Wiltshire Police
    • the US: U.S. Navy, Oracle, CDM Smith, Black & Veatch, Deloitte

Appearing high can mean growth, turnover, an agency posting for a client, or a bulk feed repeating one advertisement. Research, not a recommendation.

    What gets people rejected

Optimising unit price alone. Every procurement interview includes a scenario where the cheapest option is the wrong one, and choosing it without naming the risks you are accepting is the whole test.

Whatever you write, make sure the resume that gets you the interview can survive the questions it invites — everything on it is fair game, and the numbers attract the most scrutiny. Check it against a real posting before you send it.

    How long it really takes

Three to eight months from operations, finance or a technical role. This is rarely a first job, because the judgement it needs comes from having seen what a bad supplier does to a business.

Who finds this harder than expected. People who want to be liked internally. Saying no to a colleague's preferred vendor, with reasons, is a recurring part of the week.
