How to become a solutions architect
A solutions architect designs how a system will be built and then spends most of the time persuading people to build it that way. It is a technical role with a heavy communication load: engineers, security, procurement and a client all need a version of the same design pitched at their concerns. The output is often a document and a diagram, and its value is entirely in whether it gets followed.

From senior software or infrastructure engineering
The dominant route. You have built and operated systems, which is where the judgement comes from. The step up is scope and the volume of stakeholder work.
From consulting or pre-sales engineering
Strong on the client conversation and the commercial frame. The gap is depth — architects who cannot go deep get found out by engineers within a meeting.
From cloud or DevOps engineering
Natural for cloud architecture specifically. Certification is genuinely useful here, unusually for this industry.
