Application volume is the defining feature of this market. LinkedIn has been reported to process around 11,000 job applications per minute — roughly a 45% year-on-year rise — and recruiters describe receiving 300–500 applications on a popular role within three days. The practical consequence is that being a plausible candidate is no longer enough; you need to be an obvious one for the specific posting.
Two checks are worth doing before every application. First, the knockouts — work authorisation, years of experience, location and on-site expectations are filterable fields, and failing one ends the application regardless of how strong the rest is. Second, keyword coverage: make sure every skill you genuinely have that the posting names appears in your resume in the posting's own words. That is coverage, not density, and it never means adding skills you don't have. The widely-repeated claim that ATS software auto-rejects 75% of resumes is a myth traceable to a 2012 sales pitch — what actually filters you is those knockout fields plus a recruiter's six-to-eight-second scan, as our ATS guide explains with sources.

UI/UX Designer interview questions you should be ready for
These are questions that recur in ui/ux designer interviews, with the structure of a strong answer. They're from our own question bank — not scraped from review sites.
How do you make a web app accessible? Conceptual
- Use semantic HTML first — a real <button> beats a div with a handler.
- Everything usable by keyboard, with a visible focus ring and logical order.
- Give images meaningful alt text; decorative images get empty alt.
- Meet 4.5:1 contrast for body text; don't signal state by colour alone.
- Test with a screen reader and automated tooling — neither alone is enough.
Watch out: Sprinkling ARIA onto non-semantic markup instead of fixing the markup.
At senior level: Bake a11y into the design system and CI so it can't regress.
Walk me through your design process. Behavioral
- Understand the problem and the constraints before sketching anything.
- Research: talk to users, review data and look at prior art.
- Diverge with low-fidelity concepts; don't fall for the first idea.
- Prototype and test with real users; iterate on what breaks.
- Hand off with specs and states, then measure after launch.
Watch out: Presenting only polished final screens with no reasoning.

How do you handle critical feedback on your design? Behavioral
- Separate the work from yourself — the design is a hypothesis.
- Ask clarifying questions to find the underlying concern.
- Anchor the discussion on user goals and evidence, not taste.
- Where you disagree, propose a test rather than arguing.
- Follow up with what you changed and why.
Watch out: Defending every decision instead of listening for the real problem.
At senior level: Describe running critique sessions that raise the whole team's quality bar.
How do you run user research on a tight timeline? Case
- Write the decision you need to make first — that scopes the research.
- Pick the cheapest method that answers it: 5 usability sessions beats a 500-person survey for finding usability problems.
- Recruit from existing users or support tickets to save days.
- Synthesise into patterns, not anecdotes, and share the raw clips.
- State clearly what the research does and doesn't tell you.
Watch out: Running research with no decision attached — it becomes a report nobody uses.

What makes a good design system? Conceptual
- Start from tokens: colour, type, spacing — the primitives everything composes from.
- Build components with defined states and clear usage guidance.

Watch out: Treating it as a Figma library rather than a shared product with code parity.

How do you decide between an app and a mobile web experience? Case
- Start from user need and frequency of use — daily habits justify an app.
- Check what native capability you actually require (camera, offline, push).
- Weigh acquisition friction: web has no install step.
- Factor in build and maintenance cost across two platforms.
- Often the answer is web first, app once retention is proven.
Watch out: Choosing an app because it feels more serious, with no usage evidence.
At senior level: Frame it as a portfolio bet with a measurable trigger for building the app.

UI/UX Designer Jobs — common questions
What matters most in a UX portfolio?
Two or three case studies showing your reasoning, not twenty polished screens. Reviewers look for the problem, what you tried, what failed and what shipped. A portfolio of final visuals with no decisions in it reads as decoration.
Do designers need to know Figma specifically?
Effectively yes — it is the default, and most take-home exercises assume it. Knowing another tool is fine, but arriving without Figma fluency costs you time in tests that are already time-boxed.
Is UI/UX oversaturated?
The junior end is crowded. Roles asking for research skill, accessibility knowledge or design-system work are not, and those consistently take longer to fill — which is the clearest available signal of where demand actually sits.
